(across from BigLots and Harbor Freight)
Phone:734-7957
Prices: $
notable: Menudo daily

Taqueria Puro Jalisco is one of those informal and inexpensive Mexican restaurants of which there are literally hundreds in San Antonio. It's hard for Mexican food to really stand out in this town. There's just so darned much of it. But Puro Jalisco beats everything this Mexi-ficianado has ever eaten. Be warned: don't try Puro Jalisco if you have an addictive personality, or you may find yourself darkening their doorway with disturbing frequency. It's hard to know what to recommend at Puro Jalisco, because literally everything is so fantastic. How fantastic? I have never been a fan of the rice and beans that are served with Mexican meals. They always seemed like throw-aways. Just filler. That's all changed since Puro Jalisco came into my life, though. Even their rice and beans are delicious. The beans are never dry or sticky and have a wonderful smokiness. The rice is studded with vegetables and seasoned to subtle perfection.

On a recent Taco Tour I had the deliciously seasoned, tender, succulent Carne al Pastor (pork marinated in pineapple juice and chilis. Price:5.99). Both the homemade corn and homemade flour tortillas were tender and warm. The dish came with lettuce, pico de gallo and avocado as well as the aforementioned rice and beans. My dining companion had the chicken green enchiladas (Price:5.49). The tomatillo salsa had a wonderful tang and just the right touch of jalapeno. The chicken was moist and delicious. I can also tell you from rather more experience than is seemly, that the Fajitas are beyond compare. Beef, chicken and shrimp are all offered and all served on a sizzling skillet with vegetables perfectly carmelized.

A recent favorite is the Burrito Jalisco Fajita de Res (beef fajita burrito Price:4.90) This hefty burrito is stuffed with fajita meat, avocado, tomato, sour cream, topped with chile gravy and cheese. It also comes with rice and beans. Talk about a meal. The flavor is in there.

The atmosphere at Puro Jalisco is definitely casual, but the service is still great. I have never waited long for anything or had to do backflips to get the waitress' attention. The clientele is, unsurprisingly, largely Mexican and a lot of people seem to go there daily or close to. Hey, if you want good Mexican food it makes sense to go someplace actual Mexicans frequent.

So, go there. Sure they haven't been written up in a national magazine yet. And the closest you get to artwork is the beer poster of a swimsuit model contemplating a cold one. But you'll find the flavor is in every single morsel these people produce.
